It has always been one of those rumours, that eating like the Mediterraneans, despite all of the olive oil, will make us healthier
It can take literally a lifetime to gather evidence to support such a claim that it is diet rather than some other local factor that gives those in the Mediterranean:
“a reduction of overall mortality; reduced incidence of chronic diseases, especially major cardiovascular diseases; and increased likelihood of healthy ageing.”
Many of us have taken on board various elements of the Mediterranean diet, possibly because of how tasty it can be and partly because it actually recommends the moderate intake of alcohol.
Telomeres are the ‘book-ends’ on our DNA. Every time our DNA makes new cells, parts of the these wear away; this new research suggests that the telomeres belonging to those on a Mediterranean diet wear away at slower rate than those on a non-Mediterranean diet.
